52 But at the very time these theses on black liberation were being accepted by the SWP, James was breaking utterly with Trotskyism itself, whether "orthodox" or otherwise. In Notes on Dialectics (1948) and State Capitalism and World Revolution (1950), James abandoned the Leninist model of the revolutionary party, and in 1951, his cothinkers left the SWP to form an independent Marxist organization, the Committees of Correspondence. Following James's expulsion from the United States in 1953, this small group would suffer two splits of its own.

He also worked at several ambitious writing projects. In 1936, his drama Toussaint Louverture, starring Paul Robeson, played in London to generally good reviews. The same year saw publication of Minty Alley, a novel about life among the poor in Trinidad. In 1937, there followed World Revolution 1917-1936, a critical history of the Third (Communist) International, written from a Trotskyist perspective. Then, in 1938, James published his masterpiece: The Black Jacobins, an account of the slave uprising that created Haiti.

" Obviously she was not thinking of Africa. 23 As the transcript reveals, the discussion between Trotsky and James was not one between master and disciple. Nor was it a debate. Rather, a genuine dialogue took place. Over the following years, James's thinking on a host of questions began to depart from Trotsky's; yet those 1939 conversations remained central to the development of James's work on African-American matters.
