MORAÑA For his part, Vargas Llosa proceeds by cautiously and reluctantly approaching the edges of criollo culture: examining the substance of local alterity from an external and privileged position that always permits him to represent the drama of Peruvian interculturality from outside and above it. The conflicts of class, race, and gender therefore appear in his work as shifting geological layers from whose realignments the problematic (which is to say, incomplete and perhaps doomed) modernity of the Andean region emerges, fragmented and provisional.

Indeed, both authors, especially when they are analyzed as two sides of the same coin of a still-unsolved dilemma of Andean society, represent, on the one hand, the inescapable stance against colonialism and the forms of domination enshrined within the criollo republic and, on the other hand, the demands imposed by the processes of Westernization that drive growth and an accelerated cosmopolitanization of societies that are peripheral to “high” capitalism during the second half of the twentieth century and up to the present day in the twenty-first century.
