Screenings seldom took place in specialized places. They rather did so in fairs, markets, country festivals, churches, schools, and vaudeville theatres. Programmes consisted of separate views: The earlier ones shocked spectators just because of the old surprise, the reproduction of ‘true life’ on a screen (for instance, Rough Sea at Dover, Birt Acres, 1895); the latter ones carried them away because of the exhibition of any sort of sensational thrills.
