When a small amount is ignited, the separation process is incomplete due to the fast cooling process. There is a different situation when pure ceramic powders are synthesized from elements. In order to synthesize by the SHS technique fine or ultrafine ceramic or intermetallic powders with high sinterability, the SHS product should be exposed to high temperatures for a very short period of time. Melting, sintering, and particle growth are undesirable processes. They can be minimized by proper reactant dilution.
